The Global Environmental Impacts of Consumption (GEIC) indicator estimates the levels of deforestation, biodiversity loss and water stress resulting from the consumption of specific countries across the globe. This indicator is useful in assessing whether a country’s consumption is at sustainable levels and identifying where it has contributed to environmental degradation.

  • CoPalCam Palm Oil Supply Chain

    • Local communities
    • Those facilitating supply chain discussions

CoPalCam is a strategy game offering players the opportunity to identify spaces for positive change on palm oil supply chains in Central Africa. Players can choose from a range of characters, such as smallholder farmers, entrepreneurs and industries from which to navigate complex supply chains and make sustainable changes. This is an in-person game requiring facilitation and support from LEAF Inspiring Change. If you have interest in using this game at an event or conference, please contact LEAF Inspiring Change or lead researcher Marieke Sassen at: marieke.sassen@wur.nl

    • Financial Institutions

We all rely on natural capital, with dependencies on the ecosystems that provide us services such as food, water and mental wellbeing. Encore (exploring natural capital opportunities, risks and exposure) guides financial institutions in understanding dependencies on ecosystems services across their portfolios, highlighting potential risks from the impacts of these dependencies.

    • Practitioners

CIFOR-ICRAF and IPB University Indonesia, in collaboration with Agate Studio, developed an innovative tool to promote a landscape approach to sustainable trade using the Android-based application “Landscape Game”. Version two is based on the first version with more advancement on the commodity trade aspects. The game aims to serve as educative and capacity building tool for college students, practitioners, and policymakers. It is designed with “fun learning” experiences for the users in mind.

The Kunming-Montreal biodiversity package was adopted by Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity at the UN Biodiversity Conference in December 2022. The package contains a set of goals and targets to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, and an associated monitoring framework. Each of these indicators provides data on the progress towards a different goal within the Kunming-Montreal biodiversity package.

Resource Trade is a database featuring bilateral trade data from the Chatham House Resource Trade Database. Users can find data on trade flows of commodity types between two given countries at a chosen year. Commodity types are grouped by agricultural products, fertilisers, forestry products, fossil fuels, metals and minerals and pearls and gemstones. After selecting their desired options, they can then view further data such as the specific commodities traded within the wider group and environmental footprints.

Trase provides markets, governments and civil society with data on the deforestation along the supply chains of commodities like beef and soy, from their origins in producer countries, to their final form on supermarket shelves in consumer countries. This enables: Governments of consumer countries to create policy to limit deforestation and enable sustainable trade flows, Buyers, traders, manufactures and retails to increase transparency along their supply chains and to better act against negative consequences on nature and people, Financial institutions to consider deforestation risk as part of their investments.
